I got this idea a while ago, when I saw Prince Caspian for the first time... Recently, I decided it would make a better short story than it would a novel. So here's the idea:
Retaiella (Reta) is the princess of Ramas, a powerful southern kingdom in a world I have yet to name. Her cousin is very... convincing. He stages a coup in which Reta's parents are killed, but she manages to run away. She seeks refuge in the kingdom just to the north of Ramas for two years, during which time her cousin proves to be a cruel and unjust ruler. Her people are suffering, but Reta is, too... She believes that whatever hardships the people are now suffering, they brought upon themselves. Reta's parents were good people and good rulers.
Then a street girl from Ramas comes north, searching for Reta. The girl once tried to pick Reta's pocket and was caught, but Reta saved her life by telling the guards to let her go. Because of this, she has great faith that Reta will come back and help them. Reta, though, is not convinced. She is still hurt that the people chose to kill her parents and force her into exile, and since this street girl seems to be the only one who wants her back, Reta refuses to go.
Unknowingly, the street girl has led the Black Guard (the personal guard of Ramas's ruler) straight to Reta. The cousin has been searching for her for the two years, and he's finally found her. Reta manages to escape, barely, but she's in a bad way now. All of her money and belongings were left behind when she ran from the inn where she was staying, and she can hardly go back.
She eventually sneaks into an old barn to sleep for a night, exhausted and half-starved. The old lady whose husband owns the barn catches her and threatens her with a pitchfork, thinking that she's a thief. When Reta claims innocence, her thick accent gives her away. The Black Guard had already come through there and warned the elderly couple that "the girl who murdered the former king and queen of Ramas is nearby." So, of course, the old lady knows that Reta is the one they're looking for. When she sees Reta's face, though, she sees the hardship and fear there and takes pity on her. The couple feeds her and lets her sleep in their house that night. The lady says something about everyone deserving a second chance.
The next morning, the boy who helps the couple around the farm sees Reta and immediately runs for the Black Guard, who stayed the night in a nearby village. Reta makes another close escape and is on the run again - but this time, she's running south. She's going back to Ramas, to lead a rebellion, like the street girl asked her to.
So that was a pretty long summary... Lol. What do you think?
